What Exactly is That “Fishy” Smell?

There is a smell that is often associated with the vagina that is unnatural: that godawful fishy smell. For years I have heard both men and women mention the smell in conversations and in jokes and never understood what they meant until I had the unfortunate opportunity to smell exactly just what they meant. Most people that talk about the “fishy” smell often associate it with a woman’s menstrual cycle and the smell of the blood that is produced from it, but that smell isn’t normal for a healthy woman and the truth behind it needs to be exposed. So what exactly is that “FISHY” SMELL? I’m Glad you asked!

First, it has to be understood that the vagina has a smell all is own and is associated with woman’s natural odor. The vagina will have a mild smell that shouldn’t be detected outside of clothes, but if a strong smell is present that can be sensed when the wind passes by a woman’ pelvis carrying the stench with it, then there is a problem.

There are three reasons why a woman’s vagina can carry the rancid fishy smell:

Dear Aunt Flo

During the menstrual cycle, women lose a certain amount of blood and uterine lining that does carry a particular smell, but it isn’t one that should be far off from a woman’s natural body odor and it shouldn’t be detectable through her clothes. If this blood is left to sit for too long, it can collect bacteria and begin to carry a smell that can repel a person several feet away. The best way to keep this from happening is for a woman to shower frequently during her cycle, keep the vulva clean between showers by using feminine wipes and change pads or tampons often.

Infection

When the pH level of the vagina are thrown off, infections can occur that come with itching, burning and an unpleasant odor. BV (bacterial vaginosis) is a common female infection that is caused by an overgrowth of bad bacteria in the vagina and is accompanied with a discharge and a fowl “fishy like” odor (can not be passed on to partners). The STD Trichomonas is also accompanied with a fowl smell (trich is infectious). Both of these STIs are curable and can be treated within 10 days of diagnosis if the medication is taken as directed.

Imbalance from using scented products

Those scented bubble bath, “vaginal deodorants” and scented pads and tampons smell great, but these products contain certain chemicals that can irritate the vagina and cause vaginal discharge, swelling and odor. Avoiding these product can prevent an unpleasant smell all together. Who ever thought something that smells so good can cause a bad odor!

You are what you eat

Everything that is put into the body filters out at some point during its processing. The foods we eat have an affect on the skin, the breath, the teeth and even the genitals. Certain foods have an affect on the taste and the smell of the vagina. Certain types of fish and green vegetables can cause the vagina to have more of a bitter smell, so drinking lots of water and experiment with these foods to determine which ones are better for you as far as balancing your pH.

Sex Position Of the Week: Shoulder Split

Welcome back you curious students! It’s a new week which means a new lesson on sex positioning for the novice and for the advanced. This week’s sex position requires a bit of flexibility from the female partner and is a missionary position. It is called “Shoulder Split” and it’s level of difficulty is moderate.

Benefits of this position
*It provides deep penetration
*It is relatively comfortable for both partners
*It creates intimacy between the two partners
*The clitoris can be stimulated in this position using a clitoral vibrator or the fingers of either partner

Hazards in this position
*The female partner may experience pain if her inner thigh muscles are tight
*The under leg that is resting on the bed may loose circulation if in this position for too long
*The female partner’s breathing can become shortened

Props or furniture needed
*A bed is the most desirable piece of furniture to use
*A pillow to prop the female partners’s head up
*CONDOMS are always a must
*Clitoral vibrator

Before going into any sexual experience, always know the STD status of your partner and your own status. To find a testing site near you, visit www.gytnow.org

DON’T FORGET TO USE CONDOMS TO REDUCE YOUR CHANCES OF CONTRACTING STDs

How to get into position

1) The female partner should lay on her back with her legs extended strait out on the bed. She can use a pillow to prop her head up for more comfort.

2) The male partner should then position himself on his knees at the feet of his partner and grab one of her legs to place over the shoulder of his choice. He should then straddle the leg that is laying in the bed and place the elevated leg over his shoulder.

3) At this point, he should be able to move closer to her pelvis and be in position for penetration.

If you choose to bring a clitoral vibrator into the bedroom for this position, the female partner can self stimulate while her partner gets in his long stokes. Vaginal lubrication will increase and the cervix will move closer to the uterus causing the vagina to lengthen for a more comfortable experience for her.

Sexual Hygenie 101: How to Properly Cleanse Your Private Parts

You would think that it is safe to assume that every adult knows how to care for their genitals properly, but in my travels and conversing with a number of people, I have become aware of just how wrong that assumption is. I can understand why an adult wouldn’t know how to properly care for their private parts if no one has shown them, but there are too many resources to reference to find how to cleanse properly to remain blissfully ignorant.

Maintaining proper genital health is highly important in maintaining overall health and preventing the spread of harmful bacteria and STDs. It’s also important during the process of building intimacy with your partner. If your private parts carry a foul smell, the stench will send your partner heading to the hills never to request sex again ( or some may accept the sex and talk about you behind your back). Proper care and cleansing is simple and doesn’t take more than 2-5 minutes in a daily shower. Here are some basic tips on how to cleanse properly.

WOMEN
The one issue we have as women is that the vagina is a space within our bodies where we can’t see what is going on or how it has been affected. Bacteria, semen and discharge can get stuck within the vaginal walls and around the cervix for days or even weeks, so it is important to cleanse thoroughly daily. Douching is the one process that advertisers recommend, but your average GYNE will tell you that using a douche IS NOT HEALTHY for your vagina simply because it will throw off the pH balance of the vagina. The best way to clean the vagina is to take a warm bath and soak for 15-30 minutes. Of course a bath isn’t going to fit into your schedule if you’re rushing out the house to get to work, but use your after work time to relax and give your vagina the care it needs.

Also remember to clean the parts of the vulva thoroughly. Pulling the labia minora (small lips) apart and cleaning around then will reduce the amount of bacterial buildup around your urethra and help prevent the contraction of a UTI (urinary tract infection). Don’t forget to pull back the skin around the clitoris to cleanse the delicate skin of bacterial buildup (you may notice a whitish buildup around the clitoris when you pull the hood back…CLEAN IT OFF) . One major thing to pay attention to is the natural smell your vagina gives off and the color and consistency of your natural discharge. If there are any changes in the color of the discharge or in the smell of the vagina, then seek medical attention to make sure you aren’t carrying an infection. Sprays, powders and washes will only mask the smell if there is a dangerous level of bad bacteria or a virus present.

MEN

Cleansing the penis is much more simple than the vagina since it hangs outside of the body. Men that have a foreskin need to make sure to roll the skin back and clean around it to avoid the buildup of dead skin cells and bacteria that can cause odor. For men that don’t have a foreskin, making sure to clean around the rim of the head of the penis is critical, and cleansing the scrotum (balls) for both circumcised and uncircumcised men in necessary. A smelly ball sack is a huge turn off for any woman that wants to go down on her partner.

Anti bacterial soaps like Dial are great to use when cleansing the genitals, and formulas for sensitive skin since the genitals are made up of some of the most delicate skin on the body. If the skin around the genitals becomes dry, using a few drops of vitamin E oil will add some moisture to the area without disturbing the genitals’ ecosystem. Whether you take a bath or utilize a quick shower, always remember to use a bit of friction to scrub away any unwanted particles, but know the limits of how much pressure to apply to avoid damaging any parts of the genitals.

Sex Position of the Week: Missionary Eagle

Welcome to a new and exciting week for sex education! Class is now is session for sex positioning, and this week’s position is one of the simplest I’ve ever posted. Getting into this position is a breeze as it is the default position for every couple, even first timers. This week’s sex position is called “Missionary Eagle” and it is a missionary position that requires a bit of flexibility in the legs of the female partner.

Benefits of this position

*Easy and quick to get into
*intimacy is created through the face to face contact
*Comfortable for both partners
*Easy access to the vaginal opening because of the parted legs
*Deeper penetration can be achieved because of the angle of the legs

Hazards to look out for
*The female partner’s legs being parted and lifted in this way may become tired after a period of time
*The legs being pushed close to the female partners’s chest may cause a shortness of breath

Suggested furniture or props to use

*Bed
*Couch
*Floor
*Pillows can be used to prop up the female partner’s head

*If the floor will be used while executing this position, make sure to make a comfortable pallet on the floor from thick comforters and pillows to reduce the hardness of the floor on the back of the female partner and the knees of the male partner. Pillows can also be used

Getting into this position is simple and quick for those who are looking to get right to it. This position is also one that can be manipulated into other sex positions for a more varied sexual experience.

*ALWAYS REMEMBER TO PROTECT YOURSELF BY USING CONDOMS! And Know your STD status by getting tested. To find a testing site near you, visit www.gytnow.org

How to get into position

(1) The female partner should lay on her back with her legs bent and spread apart. She can choose to use a pillow to prop her head up if she chooses.

(2) The male partner should then position himself between his partners’s legs while on his knees and grab her legs, one I each hand, underneath the knee where it meets the thigh and lift and spread her legs farther apart and back towards her chest slightly. Once her legs are in position, the male partners’s hands will be free to caress her breasts, support his own weight while thrusting or to grab and reposition her legs.

(3) At this point, both partners should be in position and ready to get their eagle on! This position is also a great position for kissing and body to body contact.

Sex Position of the Week: Side Rider

Welcome back students! You are now in another week’s lesson in sex positioning, and this week’s position is one that works for both the novice partner and the experienced. This week’s position is called “Side Rider” and it is one that is comfortable for both partners and can allow the male partner to feel every curve in the vagina while experiencing a tight fit and deep penetration. This position can be used as a transition position from one position into another or is great to use as a stand alone.

Benefits of the position

DEEP PENETRATION
COMFORTABLE
CAN BE USED AS A TRANSITION POSITION
THE MALE PARTNER CAN SEE THE FACES HIS PARTNER MAKES
EASY TO GET A LONG STROKE
GREAT VIEW OF THE BUTT FOR CHEEK LOVERS 😉
FEMALE PARTNER CAN EASILY “THROW IT BACK” (gyrate)

Complications with this position could exist depending on how the penis is angled . If the penis has a curve down, to the left or to the right then slight adjustments may have to be made to insure penetration is comfortable for both partners.

Getting into position is easy! Follow these simple steps and get ready for a smooth ride.

*ALWAYS remember to practice safer sex by using a condom throughout the entire session, and know your STD status! To get tested, find a testing site near you…visit www.gytnow.org for more information*

How to get into position

1) The female partner should lay on whichever side she chooses with her legs pulled midway to her chest. She can use her hand on the outside free arm to support herself during penetration by placing her palm flat on the bed in front of her. She can use the other arm that rests underneath her to support her head while laying down.

2) At this point, the male parter should be ready to get into position by placing himself behind his partner while kneeling on his knees so his pelvis is level with her vaginal opening. Once he is ready to penetrate, his partner should spread her legs slightly to give him easy access to her vagina from behind.

With his free hands, the male partner will be able to support himself during the stroke and dig a little deeper by grabbing onto the outer hip of his partner. He can also use his hands to massage her butt (an erogenous zone) while he is inside of her, adding to her overall pleasure.

Performing Fellatio Regularly Reduces Chances of Getting Breast Cancer

For all of you women in the world who are opposed to performing fellatio on your partners, there is now a good reason for you to start performing more regularly.

According to a study performed by a research team at North Carolina University, women who performed fellatio one to two times a week and ingested semen had a lower occurrence of breast cancer than those who had not.

The research group consisted of 15,000 women ages 25 to 45 who were monitored over five to ten years. The group was broken up into women who performed fellatio regularly (6,246) and women who didn’t (9,728)

The results showed that the women who performed fellatio regularly had a breast cancer rate of 1.9% while the women who didn’t had a rate of 10.4%.

What this study proves is that fellatio has even more health benefits than we thought and should be added into a regular health routine.

One thing you have to always be aware of is the STD status of your partner, so I only suggest swallowing if you know your partner is CLEAN or if you are in a monogamous relationship.

Want to reduce your chances of getting breast cancer, then get into that submissive position and start the slurping!

Sex Position of the Week: Back Door Planking

Follow me on twitter and Instagram @glamazontyomi

Welcome to another rousing week of sex education! Class is now in session, and as you can see from the picture above, I am now demonstrating the positions of the week with my new volunteer and teddy bear faced friend (lol) Colin (@killcolin). This week’s sex position is for all of the doggie style lovers and is called “Back Door Planking”. This position is one that can be transitioned into from traditional doggie style when the back of the female partner gives out under extreme pleasuring. It is one that is comfortable for both partners, provides deep penetration, and offers a tight fit due to the legs being close together and narrowing the opening of the vagina. The tight fit provides extra stimulation for each partner and is one that is sure to bring about a simultaneous climax.

*PLEASE NOTE* Some positions may not be comfortable for each partner during penetration depending in the curve and size of the penis and the depth and curve of the vagina. Make sure you communicate during sex in order to get the right positioning and the right feel.

***This position can also be used as an anal sex position***

CONDOM USE DURING THE ENTIRE INTERCOURSE EXPERIENCE IS RECOMMENDED! And always know your STD status. To find a location near you, please visit www.gytnow.org

HOW TO GET INTO POSITION (It’s simple)

1) The female partner should lay flat on her stomach and raise her pelvis in the air slightly to allow her partner access to her vagina from behind.

2) The male partner should then position himself directly behind his partner and prepare for entry by grabbing her hips and putting himself in the right angle for penetration.

3) At this point both partners should be in position and ready to go. Once the male partner has fully inserted himself, the female partner can lower her pelvis onto the bed slowly and keep her legs close together for that tight squeeze.
