We have always been told that having sex with condoms is practicing "safe sex," however, sex with condoms is simply "safer sex." Condoms are the only form of contraception that provide a reduction in the transmission of STDs, but they do not completely prevent the possibility of these infections being passed on. According to The National Institute of Health and the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, these are the real facts about condoms:
- Condoms provide no reduction in the transmission of the human papilloma virus (HPV) or Trichomonas vaginalis.
- Syphilis transmission is reduced 29% for typical use. It is reduced 50 to 71% when condoms are used correctly 100% of the time.
- Gonorrhea and Chlamydia transmission is reduced by approximately 50% even when condoms are used 100% of the time.
- Genital herpes transmission is reduced by approximately 40%
- HIV transmission is reduced by approximately 85% when condoms are used correctly 100% of the time.
This post wasn't created to persuade the sexually active out of using condoms, but rather to educate those who choose to engage in sex about the real, hard core facts about condoms. Using a condom during sex has the benefits of preventing unwanted pregnancy and reducing the transmission of harmful diseases through genital to genital contact and bodily secretions. Even though condoms don't completely prevent the transmission of STDs, they should still be used to reduce the risk, especially when involved with multiple partners.
When you are educated, you make better choices. If you choose to be sexually active, be smart, make safer decisions and take control of your sexual health. Choosing abstinence is the only way to be 100% protected from contracting STDs/STIs is to choose abstinence.
